Shelter Island is approximately 12 square miles
and is located between the north and south forks of eastern Long Island. One-third of the island is a spectacular nature preserve. You can walk, bike, play tennis, swim, golf, fish, sail, kayak and, of course, horseback ride here. There are miles of wooded trails, and from October through April you can ride on the many sandy beaches.

Shelter Island is a magical place to have a primary residence or a second home. The pace is relaxed and the people are extremely friendly. Some were born here, but most found their way here from various parts of the world, making for a varied and interesting culture. Many artists and writers live on Shelter Island, but mostly people come here to be close to nature and experience the extraordinary beauty of the island.

There are no franchises on Shelter Island, no McDonald’s or the like. Of course, we have many fine restaurants, great hotels and inns, shops and business services to meet your every need (including high-speed internet access and a cell phone tower), yet we’re virtually free of the traffic and crowds that invade the nearby Hamptons.

Shelter Island is close to the well-known Long Island wineries, and the Hampton Classic, the largest English riding horse show in the country, is practically next door. For those who like to compete, Long Island has numerous rated and non-rated horse shows throughout the year.

It takes only 2 ½ hours by car, bus, or train from New York City to reach the ferry that will transport you in only four minutes to another place in time. Shelter Island offers the best of both worlds – it’s close enough to Manhattan or the Hamptons so you can shop to your heart’s content or take in a movie or a play, go to a museum or see a concert, yet live in a beautiful, quiet environment where you can commune with nature and your horse.
